NAEA Announces New Executive Vice President

Michael Nelson, CAE, Has Background in Finance, Branding and Leadership

WASHINGTON, DC, SEPTEMBER 2—The National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA) is pleased to announce that Michael Nelson, CAE, has accepted the position of Executive Vice President, effective September 1, 2009. As the top staff executive, Nelson is responsible for the successful implementation of the goals and initiatives set by the Board of Directors in accordance with NAEA’s strategic plan.

Nelson brings a strong history of innovative leadership at a number of prestigious organizations spanning a twenty-year career in association management. Nelson earned the impressive certified association executive (CAE) designation from the American Society of Association Executives, having passed a rigorous examination on the critical competencies necessary for successful association management and having committed to ongoing studies to remain abreast of current best practices. There are fewer than 3700 such credentialed professional nationwide.

Nelson served most recently as the Chief Operating Officer at the Society of Nuclear Medicine where he focused on rebranding initiatives to reposition the organization for market dominance, which increased media and website activity while improving member affinity. He also developed a Leadership Academy to enhance volunteer organizational skills, increased participation of emerging leaders on the national level, and implemented resources to expand the organizational capacity of the local chapters. As Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer, Nelson also rebranded the National Building Museum, redesigning the website and significantly elevating the national and international profile of the institution. In addition, Nelson was CEO with the Audubon Naturalist Society of the Central Atlantic States, as well as vice president of the Florida Audubon Society. He holds dual bachelor degrees from the University of West Florida in management and in marketing.

In today’s climate of potential regulation of commercial tax preparers, increased IRS activity, the ever-widening tax gap, and the complexity of the tax code itself, NAEA and enrolled agents are poised to catapult into national prominence. Nelson’s skill set and leadership abilities uniquely qualify him to serve as both visionary and steward for the association through the upcoming challenges and opportunities.
